Revolution in medicine

Revolutionary medical solutions are one of the most exciting things our era has brought on. But will these solutions be the source of other problems?

Genomics and gene editing enable the detection and repair of lethal mutations in fetal age. Thus we can avoid deadly diseases. But where are the limits? Should we use it for designing humans?

Organ functions can be replaced by technical devices, like an artificial pancreas. This enables healthy survival for many, but will these people feel themselves dependent on machines and stigmatized by their peers?

Personalized medicine will diminish the chances of treatment failures dramatically. But it carries the risk of a horrible explosion of costs that might widen economic gaps in our society.

Automated E-healthcare makes possible standardized continuous care for all of us, but thus we would also lose the important benefits of personal physician-patient relationship.

Stem cell therapy will let us regenerate damaged organs. Is this the key to eternal youth or is it a distopia of disintegrated human bodies?

These hard questions were in the focus of a debate session at ESOF. What is your opinion? Leave a comment below!
