Bacterial resistance
Nowadays antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a serious threat. As a result of this, some of seriuos diseases are spreading again e.g. cholera or tuberculosis. Here in the ESOF we have learnt several aspects about this issue. In an early morning session we heard a review on antimicrobial resistnce: we got to known about the economy, law, policy making and science of the solution to AMR. In a round table discussion we shared our ideas on this topic, and we heard some country-specific regulations. In an other session, we learnt more about the scientific solutions. We heard about how we can use our antibiotics more effectively, some basic research about the bacteria, and novel diagnostics. The improvent of diagnosis can be a key in reducing AMR: if we know which bacteria exactly infected the patient, we could use a more efficient therapy. There is a note that came up in all sessions: it is imprtant to know that we should stop using antibiotics needlessly. That is something what anyone can do to help defeat AMR.
